Adoption FAQs
Here is a list of the most frequently asked questions we receive. If you have additional adoption questions you are welcome to contact us, and we will do our best to help you with your adoption decision.
Are you affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States or other local Humane Societies and SPCAs?
No, the Humane Society & SPCA of Sonoma County is a private, non-profit organization that is solely funded and supported by individuals in the community. We do not receive any funding from government sources or national organizations, and we are not affiliated with other Humane Societies, SPCAs or the HSUS.
Where does the Humane Society get their animals from?
- We take in strays from the city of Sebastopol.
- We receive owner surrendered animals by appointment with space availability.
- We also bring in transfers from rescue groups and other animal agencies throughout the state where an animal’s time may be up or their chances for adoption are better suited here.
Does the Humane Society have any small dogs available for adoption?
- Yes, if we currently do not have dogs of a particular size (small, medium, or large), please check back with us again soon. We receive animals every day and many undergo medical care, training and other procedures before being put up for adoption.
- If you do not see the type of dog you’re looking for in our adoptable animals, check back frequently as our animals are updated often.
- Or we suggest checking with other shelters in our area. A list of other shelters in the county is available.
What happens to an animal when they enter the shelter?
- All of our cats and dogs receive a physical examination, spay or neuter surgery if not already done and a microchip.
- Cats receive vaccinations, deworming, defleaing and are tested for leukemia.
- Dogs receive vaccinations, deworming, defleaing and are tested for heartworm.
- Animals that require dentistry, receive a teeth cleaning in our Hospital.
- A professional trainer and behaviorist evaluates all of our dogs and places them into a training program prior to adoption.
- In many cases, we provide long-term rehabilitation for sick or injured animals.
Is the Humane Society a no kill facility?
We are a life-oriented shelter that keeps animals that are non-aggressive and free of chronic health problems until they are adopted. No matter how long it takes.
