Feral Cat Population Control

The Problem

Sonoma County has thousands of feral (undomesticated) cats that are on the streets. These cats are scared, hungry and often require medical attention. They also are reproducing at an enormous rate.

The Solution

The best and most humane solution is to trap, vaccinate, spay/neuter and release these cats so that they may carry out their lives without adding to the population problem. Unfortunately adult feral cats are usually not adoptable because of their wild instincts. However kittens of feral cats can be domesticated if trapped/caught at an early age.

How You Can Help

If you see a colony of feral cats, DO NOT BEGIN FEEDING THEM. If you set out food before putting together a trapping plan, you are going to increase the population and cause an even worse problem. The best thing you can do is trap them and get them fixed. Once they are spayed or neutered, think about whether you can care for a colony of feral cats. It’s a long-term commitment that requires daily food, water, care and medical attention. If you’d like to help fund the cost of spay/neuter surgery for feral cats, please make an online donation now.

Trapping Services

The Humane Society & SPCA of Sonoma County does not trap feral cats. We rent traps, and provide spay/neuter services. If you plan on trapping a cat for spay/neuter surgery, please call our Veterinary Hospital first to find out the dates/times we can perform the operation.
